This golden headdress originates from the region Tulang Bawang, currently known as the Lampung province located on the south of Sumatra, Indonesia. In the 7th century the Chinese officially recorded this province the Sumatran Kingdom Sriwijaya. Between the 6th and the 12th century Sriwijaya was the leading maritime power of Southeast Asia and was seen as the center of Asia of Buddhist learning. The Buddhist 'lotus' and the 'ship' motif are merged as a significant icon for the Lampung province untill today.
The wedding ceremony is one of the most important life events in Lampung's culture, where the bride wears this massive gold headdress shaped like a ship filled with lotus flowers. During the rituals of the ceremony the bride sits on a pile of ship decorated cloths, in front of a huge ship-decorated wall, wearing this headdress as she symbolically moves from one stage to another in life.
