Dawan is an original Alu bag from West Timor. The fabric is made according to a special kind of weaving technique called Tenun Buna, typical for Timor, Indonesia. This weave technique is unique since the treads or strings of cotton are tie-dyed before woven into a patern. Also, the treads are dipped in natural colorings like for example a red color from the root of the Ka’bo tree, Ru Dao leaves for a purple color and mengkude leaves for a yellow dye.
Dawan is double-sided and decorated with beads, tassels and old Dutch-Indonesian coins from the Dutch East Indies period (Dutch colony, 1606-1949).
