This little couple, who represent Dewi Sri and Sadono, is typical Javanese and more specifically finds its origin in the city Solo. The outfits are a typical Javanese costume for the wedding ceremony.
Characteristic for the woman's feature is the black drawings on the forehead near the hairline, called 'Paes'. Paes is a symbol of beauty of Javanese women and also indicates that the woman has grown into her adulthood. The curves in the black drawings on her forhead have different meanings with her role in the family as the focal point.
The male statue wears a typical hat from Yogjakarta named the 'Blangkon'. Back in the day men had long hair and they tied it in a bun, which creates this shape at the back of the hat. Since Javanese people are known to be very polite and raised to not get mad in order to consider other people's feelings. This bun represents the typical Javanese character of controlling his emotions.
