These beautiful adornments are handmade and inspired by the necklaces worn by the Asmat people from the Papua Island, Indonesia.
The word Asmat literally translates to ‘people of the trees’, and their spiritual beliefs and practices center on nature, which they consider sacred. The Asmat people are well known for their extraordinary art of wood carving and rich culture. The Asmat live harmoniously in the middle of nature. They cover their body parts with leaves or fibers of the forests that represent their intertwining with the natural surroundings. They also carry accessories like necklaces and bags that are usually decorated with shells or tusks of wild pigs. The necklaces of the Asmat tribes have high aesthetic value as they are worn by certain rituals. These necklaces also serve as a payment good or to barter with the neighboring tribes.
Our special Papua necklaces are hand made in Bali, of which the shells originate from Papua.
These beautiful home accessories are supplied with a standard. Although, they are intended as home accessories, they can of course also be worn as a statement piece.
