The gandek is a very finely woven antique bamboo basket typically used on the island Lombok, Indonesia.
Gandeks were generally used for carrying food, sirih (betelnut) or fish. Shepherds and fishermen were often best known for using these gandeks.
They are constructed with an inner and outer layer of woven bamboo, making it not only very sturdy but also handy to put their money in between these two layers. Its base and top are made of hand carved wood.
A gandek can be used for food storage in the kitchen, such as potatoes, rice of onions, but it can also be displayed as a beautiful piece of home decoration.
